本人長期在美國從事中國現當代文學和比較文學等領域的研究。研究主要致力以下方向:近代、現代、當代文學和文化史的互動對話;比較文學理論在中國語境內的介紹和省思;華語語系文學的研究和推動。

晚清文學與「被壓抑的現代性」

在中國敍事文學的研究裏,晚清小說一向較少受到重視。但不論從歷史、美學、意識形態及文化生產的角度來看,此一時期的小說所顯現的活力及複雜面向,都具有重要的歷史意義和現實意義。尤其對研究現代文學者而言,晚清小說不僅代表一個從傳統到現代過渡階段;它的出現,還有它的被忽視,本身就已經見證了中國文學現代性發展的自身規律和特點。本人將晚清的時代範圍擴及到鴉片戰爭以後,並力求打破以往「四大譴責小說」或「新小說」為主線的傳統論述。文本詮釋之外,將晚清小說視為一個新興文化場域,在其中世變與維新,歷史與想像、國族意識與主體情操、文學生產技術與日常生活實踐等議題,展開激烈對話。

歷史、敍事、與倫理學思考

近年同時從事「歷史迷魅與文學記憶」研究計畫。通過研究文學中的歷史記憶作用,如關於戰爭、關於社會變化、關於歷史事件等等,對於我們重新認識現代歷史的真實細節,重新審視傳統都有很重要的啟示作用。借著這一論式,研究計畫觸及歷史與文學間複雜的對話關係,如民族國家意識的生成、文類秩序與象徵體系的重組、史學正義與詩學正義的辯證關係、群眾與個人主體的互動,還有更重要的,如時間、書寫、欲望、記憶所構成的敍事網路。

華語語系文學研究

華語語系文學 (Sinophone Literature) 在海外漢學研究領域裏是一新興觀念。歷來我們談現代中國或中文文學,多以Modern Chinese Literature稱之。這個說法名正言順,然而有鑒於二十世紀中以來海外華文文化的蓬勃發展,中國或中文一詞已不能涵蓋這一時期文學生產的駁雜現象。尤其在全球化和後殖民觀念的激蕩下,我們對國家與文學間的對話關係,必須作出更加靈活的思考。
