Aesthetic philosophy seeks to develop an aesthetic approach to philosophy and to move towards aesthetics as first philosophy. A transcultural horizon that includes East Asian aesthetics and art can be particularly helpful in this endeavor. In East Asian traditions, aesthetics has not been mainly confined to the world of appearances and phenomena. Rather, it entails a Way that moves between the material and the spiritual, the physical and the metaphysical, desublimation and sublimation, downgoing and upgoing.
